Introduction
If you’re looking for a quick, easy, and delicious dessert that feels comforting yet elegant, these puff pastry apple and ladyfinger bundles are just what you need. Combining the flakiness of puff pastry, the soft sweetness of savoiardi (ladyfingers), and the spiced warmth of cooked apples, these little parcels are perfect for last-minute guests, cozy afternoons, or even a sweet breakfast treat. With minimal ingredients and prep time, they deliver maximum flavor and a charming homemade touch.
Ingredients:
1 sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry (rectangular or square)
2 medium apples (such as Golden Delicious or Fuji)
4-6 savoiardi (ladyfinger biscuits)
2 tablespoons brown sugar (or white sugar, if preferred)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 egg (for egg wash)
Powdered sugar for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the apples
Peel, core, and dice the apples into small cubes. Place them in a bowl and toss with the lemon juice, sugar, and cinnamon. Set aside for a few minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
Crush the savoiardi
Lightly crush the savoiardi with your hands or a rolling pin until you get coarse crumbs. These will help absorb any juices and add extra sweetness and texture.
Assemble the bundles
Unroll the puff pastry and cut it into 6 equal squares. In the center of each square, place a small layer of crushed savoiardi, then top with a spoonful of the apple mixture. Be careful not to overfill.
Fold and seal
Bring the corners of the puff pastry square toward the center to form a bundle, pinching them together gently to seal. You can twist the top slightly or leave the ends slightly open for a rustic look.
Brush and bake
Beat the egg and brush it over the tops of the fagottini for a golden finish. Transfer them to a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F) for about 20–25 minutes, or until golden and puffed.
Cool and serve
Let them cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar, if desired. Serve warm for the best experience.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Serving: These bundles are best served warm, ideally just out of the oven or reheated slightly. They pair beautifully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for a more decadent dessert.
Storage: Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To reheat, pop them in the oven at 160°C (320°F) for 5–10 minutes to restore crispiness. Avoid microwaving, as it may make the pastry soggy.
